The fall season can be a great time to start preparing your lawn for winter and the following spring. Landlords, homeowners and even renters can benefit from proactive lawn care before cold weather sets in. Help keep your yard green and healthy with these four tips:

Remove any leaves.

Consider using a leaf rake or a blower. Leaf rakes allow you to be precise about the area you’re cleaning up and have better control over where the leaves go. However, they typically require more effort than using a blower and don’t usually work well on wet leaves.

Fertilize your lawn.

Fertilizing your lawn in the fall can help to feed the grass and prepare it for winter, while also improving its ability to resist disease and other threats.

When choosing a fertilizer, consider one that has high nitrogen content—this can encourage growth and greening of your lawn. If you’re new to fertilizing, you may want to speak with a professional before using any kind of fertilizer at all; some fertilizers can be harmful if overused or applied incorrectly.

Aerate your lawn.

Aerating your lawn can help open up the soil, allowing air to flow through the roots of your grass. Core aerators are a great tool for this, but you can also use a pitchfork or shovel if you don’t have one at home.

Keep watering your lawn.

Watering when temperatures are cooler can help your lawn recover from hot summer weather. The best time to water your lawn is typically in the early morning or late evening hours, when evaporation rates are low.
