Four Questions to Ask Before Purchasing Car Insurance
July 22, 2022
Ask an independent insurance agent these four questions before signing on the dotted line.
1. Do I have enough coverage?
Consult with your independent agent about your state’s minimum limits and any optional coverages offered by your carrier. How much coverage is “enough” depends both on the state you live in and your personal needs. In addition to minimum required coverages and limits, your policy could include collision or comprehensive coverage, emergency roadside assistance, medical payments, or other features.
2. Am I eligible for additional discounts?
Carriers offer a variety of discounts designed to help you save money on car insurance, falling into categories like ‘driver behavior’, ‘driver characteristic’, and ‘vehicle-based’, to name a few. Bundling your home and auto policies with one carrier is one of the most common and easiest ways to qualify for a discount. Others, like good student discounts, are available to households with younger drivers that do well in the classroom.
3. Will my policy cover other drivers?
Typically, your auto insurance will cover other drivers if they’re listed on the policy, or if you’ve given them permission to operate your vehicle. This might include your immediate family, other household members, friends or extended family. There are exceptions, however, as coverages can vary between carriers and policies. Talk to an independent agent to learn more about your coverage.
4. Do I need gap insurance?
Drivers with leased or financed vehicles should consider gap insurance as protection against depreciation. If your car is stolen or totaled and your outstanding loan or lease balance exceeds the vehicle’s actual cash value, gap insurance may cover the difference.
